The Curriculum
Pupils are taught for 25 hours per week and each period is 1 hour in length (5 periods per day).
Key Stage 3
On joining the school each pupil is placed in a form. He or she will usually stay in that form throughout their time at St George’s. However, most subjects are taught in ability sets right from the start. In this way pupils have every opportunity to be challenged to achieve and to make progress whilst they maintain contact with their original “form”. All pupils follow programmes of study in English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, R.E. Technology, Art, Music, Drama, P.E. and Living Education throughout Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9.) Living Education includes elements of Sex Education and Relationships, Careers Education & Guidance, Citizenship, Study Support, Enterprise Education, Debating and Cooking!
Key Stage 4
In Year 9 pupils make some guided choices about the curriculum for their final 2 years. The assumption is that all pupils will be entered for public examinations, most commonly GCSE. All pupils will study English, Mathematics, Science (usually two GCSEs) and R.E. In addition pupils continue to follow courses in P.E. and Living Education (which includes Study Skills & PSE). However, the KS4 curriculum is developing rapidly and pupils are being given an increasing range of opportunities, tailored to their specific needs and aspirations. Detailed information and advice is updated and provided each year.
